Start makes the game, so it is very important. With bad start u will be unable to develop your company and build an efficient network. So, I'll try to describe, what to do in beginning.
First of all, look on the map. There're two efficient starts - with trains and with hovercrafts.
I.Start with train.
1) Look through the map. This map is from offline game, but settings are similar to Kurt.

in next picture i figure out routes. Main point - build from the best industry as far as possible, making a 10-14 car train.
Industry should produce 100+ units of cargo. It is efficient enough for 2 13-car trains on normal distance.
Also have a look at cargo payment rates, and u will understand that start from fruit or rubber, for example, is not very nice.

2) After a route is planned, build a station and start a train to load on it. Remember that length of line is counted as x+y between station name tiles.
3) Construction of railroad. Try to avoid building on slopes and going straight through the jungles or farms. It is too expensive for our weak company ;) Also try to avoid terraforming.
Next picture show common mistake for start route building. It is urgent only for start, later the line will improve.

4)End line with 1-tile, if u have no money left. It is not considered an abuse, cause it takes time to handle. Later it will be rebuilt.

II. Ship start. It is efficient only with nice towns/cities and in 1970-1990 years starting. It is also easier for newbies.
1) Look through the map. Now emphasis your attention on towns, not industries. Best to chhose 2 cities with 500+ population and 60+ passengers/month

Further is easy. If a city centre is within 10 tiles of a coast - expand the docks, if needed of course.

Next manual will be about improving the train line.
